ORTHODONTIC RETAINERS

After orthodontic treatment is completed, retainers help keep your teeth in their new position. Wearing retainers as instructed is an important part of protecting your new smile and maintaining your treatment results long-term.

REMOVABLE RETAINERS

Removable retainers are custom-made appliances that can be taken out when eating, brushing, and flossing. They are designed to hold the teeth in proper alignment after braces or clear aligner treatment.

Patients should wear removable retainers exactly as instructed by the orthodontist to prevent teeth from shifting.

HOW ORTHODONTIC RETAINERS ARE WORN

Retainers must be worn consistently to be effective. At first, patients may need to wear them more often, and later only at night, depending on the doctor’s instructions.

If retainers are not worn as directed, teeth can gradually move back toward their original position.

HOW TO CARE FOR ORTHODONTIC RETAINERS

Retainers should be cleaned daily with a toothbrush and cool water. When not being worn, they should always be kept in a retainer case.

Avoid hot water, leaving retainers in a hot car, or wrapping them in napkins, as they can become damaged, warped, or accidentally thrown away.

FIXED RETAINERS (BONDED WIRE)

A fixed retainer, also called a bonded wire, is attached to the back of the teeth to help keep them in place. It is not removable and works continuously to maintain alignment.

Patients with fixed retainers should brush carefully and floss around the wire to keep the area clean and healthy.

HABITS OR CONDITIONS THAT REQUIRE STRONGER RETENTION

Some patients may need stronger or longer retention if they have certain habits or conditions, such as tongue thrusting, teeth grinding, spacing, severe crowding, or teeth that tend to shift easily.

Dr. Choe will recommend the best retention plan based on each patient’s orthodontic needs and long-term stability.

DENTAL EXAMINATIONS AND CLEANINGS

Even after orthodontic treatment, regular dental examinations and cleanings are very important.

Your family dentist helps maintain healthy teeth and gums, while your retainer helps maintain your orthodontic result.

Patients should continue routine dental visits and bring their retainers to orthodontic check-ups when recommended.
